Job summary

Randstad is partnering with a Federal Government entity to recruit a Senior engagement & Media Officer in Canberra. In a fast-paced communications function, you will craft narratives, manage media inquiries, and support strategic priorities to safeguard organizational reputation.

You will develop targeted media strategies, produce statements and talking points, and lead on media analytics. The role requires 5+ years in journalism, PR, and strong stakeholder engagement; occasional on-call shifts

Randstad is currently partnering with a prominent Federal Government entity to recruit a skilled and dynamic Senior engagement & Media Officer. Joining a collaborative, fast-paced communications function, you will support strategic priorities, protect organizational reputation, and craft compelling narratives across public channels.

• Contract Length: 4 months with a 6 month extension option

Role Responsibilities

• Develop and execute targeted media strategies to support key strategic initiatives and raise public awareness.
• Manage reactive media enquiries, draft high-quality statements, talking points, and media releases under tight deadlines.
• Proactively identify media opportunities, craft narratives, and mitigate potential reputational risks.
• Build and maintain productive working relationships with media contacts, internal executives, and key stakeholders.
• Produce strategic, audience-focused content across various communication channels.
• Participate in an out-of-hours/weekend media on-call roster as required.
• Track, analyze, and report on media metrics and coverage trends.

Key Selection Criteria

• Experience: 5+ years of experience in journalism, media, or public relations. Government, public sector, or complex corporate background highly regarded.
• Communications Mastery: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of translating complex information into clear, executive-ready content.
• Media & Risk Management: Strong judgment in navigating high-pressure issues, handling media enquiries, and managing reputational risks.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Proven ability to build trusted relationships with senior leaders, subject matter experts, and external partners.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft 365, media monitoring platforms, and an intermediate capability in leveraging AI tools to optimize workflow efficiency.
