Job summary

HorizonOne Recruitment is currently partnering with a small Federal Government agency in Canberra to recruit an APS6/EL1 Financial Accountant or all-rounder for a 6–12 month labour-hire assignment.

The role covers the full financial accounting function from transactional processing through to statutory reporting, with hybrid working (2 days WFH per week after onboarding) and potential extension or conversion to permanent.

Qualifications

• Strong combined financial and management accounting experience at the APS6 or EL1 level.
• Ability to work across a broad range of operational finance activities.
• Experience delivering financial statements within an APS context.

Responsibilities

• Managing a broad, generalist financial accounting function, including payments, banking and reconciliations.
• Preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and work papers with precision.
• Contributing to the preparation of Annual Financial Statements, including end-of-year journals and notes to the audited financial statements.
• Delivering financial reporting and payroll checks.
• Supporting internal budget management and monthly performance reviews.
• Partnering with the team to strengthen internal controls, segregation of duties, and financial system integration.

Our client is a small Federal Government agency centrally located in Canberra.

They have a proficient finance team known for its professional and supportive environment, with a culture that values collaboration, innovation, and mutual support.

The Opportunity

This is a 6-12 month labour hire opportunity for an APS6 or EL1 Financial Accountant or all-rounder to join a small finance team. A hybrid working arrangement (2 days WFH per week) is available once the initial onboarding and induction period is complete.

There is opportunity for extension or conversion to a permanent role, and applications on a non-ongoing contract basis are also welcome. This role suits an experienced accountant who wants breadth across the finance function, working end-to-end rather than being siloed in a single area.

The Role

This role covers the full financial accounting function for the agency, from transactional processing through to statutory reporting.

The Ideal Person

You bring strong financial and management accounting experience, and you're comfortable moving across a wide range of operational finance activities rather than staying in one lane.

• Strong combined financial and management accounting experience at the APS6 or EL1 level


• Demonstrated ability to work flexibly across a broad range of operational finance activities


• Comfort operating in a small, collaborative team and stepping in where needed


• Federal Government or Big 4/consulting background, including practical experience delivering financial statements within an APS context at APS6 or above level.


• Proficiency in TechnologyOne or SAP (highly regarded)

Salary / Rate

• Labour hire: $70/hr - $95/hr + 12% Super


• Non-ongoing: $100k - $143k + 15.4% Super
