Job summary

Hart Marine, based in Somerville, is offering an Apprentice Boat Builder position. You’ll learn to build large fiberglass vessels and be paid while you learn, with hands-on training from qualified tradespeople.

You’ll work with a supportive team, undertake a 4-year full-time apprenticeship including TAFE training, and may participate in sea trials and boat deliveries across Australia. No prior experience required—just the right attitude and willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

• Learn to use hand and power tools safely.
• Build fiberglass components using open-mould hand layup.
• Dry lamination and vacuum infusion techniques.
• Sand, shape and finish fiberglass components.
• Assist with sea trials on Pilot Boats and boat deliveries around Australia and overseas.

Hart Marine is looking for enthusiastic Apprentice Boat Builders to join our team in Somerville.

We build large, high-performance fiberglass Pilot and Police vessels that operate around Australia and overseas. Yep — the boats you help build can end up out on the water doing some pretty important jobs!

What Will You Learn?

As an Apprentice Boat Builder, no two days will be exactly the same. You’ll learn skills including:

• Using hand tools and power tools safely
• Building fiberglass components using open-mould hand layup
• Dry lamination for vacuum infusion
• Sanding, shaping and finishing fiberglass
• Gelcoat and marine spraying
• Helping with rigging and fitting out new boats
• Assisting with sea trials on Pilot Boats
• Helping deliver boats around Australia and overseas
• General workshop and factory skills

Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before — we don’t expect you to know it all on day one. What matters most is that you’re keen to learn and have a go.

Get Qualified While You Work

Complete your apprenticeship with Hart Marine and you’ll have the opportunity to become a qualified Boat Builder and earn your Certificate III in Marine Craft Construction.

You’ll finish your apprenticeship with a recognised trade qualification, practical skills and experience that can take you well beyond your first job.
