Job summary

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is seeking a Technology Specialist Lead (AI) to design, develop and maintain AI-enabled applications and AI data pipelines across university-wide projects. Qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Engineering, or IT, or equivalent experience.
• Experience with AWS and Azure AI/ML services, data pipelines, and microservices in complex enterprise environments.
• Experience integrating with LLM APIs, RAG pipelines, vector databases.
• Strong programming ability in Python, TypeScript or C#, with CI/CD pipelines and containerisation (Docker, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps).
• Understanding of GenAIOps and LLMOps workflows, including prompt management, model evaluation, and telemetry at scale.
• Proven ability to apply privacy and security best practices, including data minimisation, redaction, and encryption in alignment with organisational governance requirements.
• Demonstrated agile delivery experience (Scrum/Kanban) and proficiency in using Jira and Confluence.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability with strong debugging and optimisation skills to resolve complex technical issues.
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; able to explain AI systems to non technical stakeholders and provide high-level technical advice.
• Knowledge of the UNSW AI Services & Governance Framework and commitment to Responsible AI practices.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health & safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development and maintenance of AI-enabled solutions, including RAG pipelines, vector database integrations and LLM-based APIs on AWS and Azure.
• Collaborate with Developers to ensure secure, efficient and responsible AI engineering practices in line with UNSW standards.
• Lead and implement AI engineering tasks within agile sprints, contributing to backlog refinement and technical reviews.
• Prepare unit and functional tests for AI components, including automated prompt evaluations and safety tests.
• Execute testing and evaluation of AI pipelines against defined KPIs and support continuous improvement across the university.
• Deliver and maintain AI and integration solutions with observability, traceability and governance compliance.
• Develop runbooks, documentation and end-user guidance for AI features; promote safe and ethical AI usage across stakeholders.
