Job summary

Queensland Government is seeking an Activities Officer to develop, manage and deliver cultural, recreational, art, craft and hobby activities for prisoners at a correctional centre. You will supervise prisoners daily, support rehabilitation through work and activities, and maintain security and compliance with guidelines.

You will prepare activity reports, monitor budgets, and assist in case management while coordinating volunteers and staff involved in recreational programs.

Qualifications

• Must have good interpersonal and communication skills for working with prisoners and staff.
• Ability to assess risk and monitor safety in a correctional environment.
• Basic budgeting/financial record-keeping skills for activity spending and reporting.

Job description

In this role you will develop, manage and deliver cultural, recreational, art, craft and hobby activities to prisoners of the correctional centre. Supervise prisoners on a daily basis and actively participate in their rehabilitation through work and program activities while monitoring and maintaining the security of the correctional centre.The primary accountabilities of the Activities Officer include:Develop productive relationships with staff, management, professionals, police and other agenciesAssist in the rehabilitation of prisoners by participating in or overseeing their work or activities and contributing to case management functions within the centreIdentify prisoners who may be at risk and advise relevant staff in a timely mannerInteract with prisoners and respond to their needs through the provision of services in an appropriate manner within relevant guidelines and rulesEncourage prisoners to participate in programs to maximise their opportunities for rehabilitationReport details or incidents and behaviour of prisoners for the purpose of the sentence management processParticipate in the reception, induction and discharge of prisoners in accordance with proceduresAssess prisoner needs prior to action and take into account traditional cultural valuesPrepare reports on relevant activities and maintain appropriate recordsProvide estimates and reports of activities spending for budget purposes, manage financial allocations and maintain records on relevant activities.Monitor and maintain the dynamic and static security requirements of the correctional centre or facility, reporting any unusual behaviours or occurrences which could result in a breach of securityUndertake searches and perform escort duties of prisoners both within the centre and externally when requiredEnsure you respond to emergency or security breaches in accordance with prescribed procedures and processesPrepare and submit accurate incident reports/ statements/ records concerning notifiable incidentsIdentify and respond appropriately to potential security risks and illegal activityProvide reports concerning equipment damage, defects or loss and maintain accurate administration recordsRestrain and control non-compliant prisoners in accordance with policies and guidelines and ensure participate in annual training in control and restraint to maintain competenceParticipate in all training as directed by the Agency including the ongoing maintenance and current competence of all qualifications including, but not limited to Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Custodial) and other annual training requirementsMaintain a professional level of appearance at all times by wearing the QCS issued uniform in accordance with Agency uniform standardsComply with all QCS policy, procedures and legislation including the applicable Code of ConductPerform other administrative duties required in the effective management of the unit.Design plan and implement a comprehensive recreational, sports, arts, crafts and hobby program for the centre's prisoners to increase the quantity and quality of recreation and leisure activities and provide daily recreational activities for prisonersMonitor and coordinate the work of volunteers and part-time staff delivering recreational, sports, art, craft and hobby programs.Coordinate a range of hobby activities available to prisoners to ensure the best possible utilisation and development of resources.Contribute to the classification and case planning of prisoners.Applications to remain current for 12 months.This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia License.
