Private Advertiser in Melbourne is seeking an Accountant - Tax & Business Services Manager to lead a blended team and manage tax preparation for individual clients while overseeing BAS/IAS and business tax returns for corporate clients.
You will mentor staff, ensure timely delivery and high-quality work, and act as the primary adviser to a growing client base throughout the year. Australian tax knowledge and leadership experience are essential.
Step into a newly created management role at a growing Melbourne accounting and advisory firm. This role combines two things: working directly with individual clients to prepare their tax returns, and leading a team that delivers compliance work for our business clients. You’ll be the face of the firm for many clients, both across the desk and online, and the trusted adviser our business clients rely on all year. We’re a practical, results-focused team. We value quick turnaround, jobs delivered on budget, and getting the work done well without overcomplicating it.
About the role and key responsibilities
Individual tax clients. You’ll personally prepare a high volume of individual tax returns, working directly with clients in face-to-face appointments at our office or through online meetings. You’ll be comfortable guiding clients through their situation on the spot, covering wage and salary income, deductions, rental properties, share portfolios and capital gains.
Business clients and team leadership. You’ll lead a blended team of onshore and offshore staff who prepare BAS/IAS, financial statements and business tax returns for companies, trusts, partnerships and sole traders. You’ll allocate work, review their output, sign off on quality and act as the main relationship manager for these clients.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Preparing individual income tax returns directly with clients, both in person and online
Managing, allocating and reviewing work prepared by onshore and offshore team members, including BAS/IAS, financial statements and business tax returns
Giving clear instructions, timely review notes and feedback to offshore staff to keep quality and turnaround consistent
Reviewing FBT and payroll tax returns where required
Taking ownership of job budgets, managing time and resources so work is delivered on budget and on time
Driving fast, efficient turnaround across both individual and business portfolios while maintaining quality
Monitoring WIP and job progress in XPM, and stepping in early when a job is at risk of going over budget or past deadline
Meeting regularly with business clients to discuss results, tax planning and their goals
Being the go-to contact for business clients’ questions and queries throughout the year
Providing practical tax planning and business advice using financial and non-financial performance information
Coordinating workflow across locations and time zones, and working alongside other specialists within the firm
Training, mentoring and giving constructive feedback to build your team’s technical skills
Spotting further client needs and introducing the firm’s wider services where they add value
