Job summary

Sharp & Carter is a boutique public practice accounting firm based in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. We seek an Intermediate or Senior Accountant to join a stable, close-knit team and work across individuals, SMEs and SMSFs with real autonomy from day one.

You will provide financial statements, tax returns, client liaison and tax planning, while mentoring junior staff and maintaining a balanced 9-5 schedule in a supportive environment.

Qualifications

• CA or CPA qualification or progression toward it.
• 2+ years in public practice (intermediate or senior level).
• Strong technical accounting and tax knowledge across financial statements and tax.
• Confident communicator with ability to build relationships with clients.
• Values stability, work-life balance, and a 9-5 culture over long hours.
• Thrives in a smaller, close-knit environment rather than a large corporate structure.
• Based locally or open to relocating to Melbourne.

Responsibilities

• Prepare financial statements and income tax returns for individuals, trusts, partnerships and companies.
• Directly manage a portfolio of clients and build long-term relationships.
• Collaborate with Partners and Managers on client matters and projects.
• Prepare BAS, FBT returns and other compliance lodgements.
• Assist with tax planning and advisory work for business clients.
• Support SMSF compliance and administration where relevant.
• Liaise with clients on financial position, queries and needs.
• Mentor and review work of junior team members.
• Contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture.

The Role

Our client is looking for an Intermediate or Senior Accountant (level negotiable, depending on experience) to join a stable, close-knit team in a firm that has been part of the local business community for over 30 years. You'll work across a varied client base spanning individuals, SMEs and SMSFs, with real autonomy and client-facing exposure from day one, all within a predictable, sustainable 9-5 structure.

Key responsibilities include:

• Preparing financial statements and income tax returns for a range of individual, trust, partnership and company clients
• Managing a portfolio of clients directly, building long-term relationships and becoming a trusted point of contact
• Work closely with Partners and Managers on client matters and special projects
• Preparing Business Activity Statements, FBT returns and other compliance lodgements
• Assisting with tax planning and advisory work for business clients
• Supporting SMSF compliance and administration where relevant
• Liaising directly with clients on their financial position, queries and ongoing needs
• Mentoring and reviewing the work of junior team members (for more senior applicants)
• Contributing to a positive, collaborative team culture

About You

• CA or CPA qualified, or well progressed towards completion
• 2+ years' experience in public practice (exact level flexible, both intermediate and senior applicants encouraged to apply)
• Strong technical accounting and tax knowledge across financial statements and income tax
• Confident communicator, comfortable building direct relationships with clients
• Someone who values stability, work-life balance and a true 9-5 culture over relentless billable hour targets
• A team player who thrives in a smaller, close-knit environment rather than a large corporate structure
• Based locally, or actively looking to move away from city-based commuting
