Job description

This is a Fixed Term Full Time appointment for 6 months, with the possibility of extension(s) and/or permanency.

Pursuant of Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, the occupant of this position must be of Aboriginal descent.

Position Profile:

The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will be responsible for working with health care teams to provide culturally safe, holistic person-centred clinical care, health education and promotion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Aboriginal people within the Great Southern region. As specified in the summary of duties, these also include working within their scope of practice and considerate of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia professional capabilities.

The occupant of this position is required to demonstrate a positive commitment to modelling our organisational values, safety and quality improvement and the Code of Conduct in all aspects of their employment. Compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, standards and legislation including Confidentiality and Work Health and Safety policies is mandatory.

The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is the largest country health system in Australia and one of the biggest in the world, providing health services to approximately half a million people, including 45,000 Aboriginal people, over a vast two and a half million square kilometre area. • Demonstrated ability and/or experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to provide primary health care in a hospital, outpatient, community or home settings.
• Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated effective interpersonal and negotiation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively engage with all levels of health care providers.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and/or as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team.
• Eligible for / or in possession of a current C or C-A class driver’s licence or other specialised licence class and ability to travel within the region as required including overnight stays.
