Offer Description

Job.ID: VID137PD125

The Vienna Institute of Demography (VID) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a

to join the Research Group on Population Data and Projections, headed by Anne Goujon. The initial period is one year. An extension might be possible.

The Population Data and Projections Research Group focuses on population projections, the collection, and harmonization of demographic and education data, as well as the integration of both. The group aims to expand methods of population projections by key demographic characteristics (age, gender, education, sub‑national level) to possibly include additional parameters that are policy‑relevant, such as health and labour‑force status. In addition, back projections by education level are being explored to complement the WIC global population and human capital projections with historical trends, potentially offering a 200-year perspective on population by educational attainment, as well as fertility, mortality, and migration by levels of education.

Your tasks:

The successful candidate will work largely independently on (sub)projects within the framework of the research group, present her/his work and results internationally at conferences, and publish in high‑ranking refereed journals. She/he will take part in the application process and the acquisition of third‑party funding and support the research group leader in coordinating the research in the team as well as in disseminating generated insights to the general public.

Your profile:
  • PhD in Demography, Social Sciences, Statistics, Economics, or other relevant fields
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate with a broader research team
  • Solid knowledge of demographic methods and population projections
  • Excellent statistical software skills, such as Stata or R
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Publication and research track record showing the ability to conduct original research on demographic processes and to raise third‑party funding
We offer:
  • Interesting and globally relevant field of research
  • Employment in one of the major centres of demographic research in Europe
  • Inspiring working atmosphere: Join an international and interdisciplinary academic team!
  • Opportunity to gain a profile as an independent scientist
  • Work-life balance: Enjoy flexible working hours (up to 40% home office upon agreement)
  • Excellent public transport connections: Your workplace in downtown Vienna, one of the most livable cities globally, is easily accessible by public transport and bike

Start of employment is as early as possible. The annual gross salary starts with a minimum of € 69.028,40, according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Please upload with your application until 30 November 2025:

  • a detailed CV
  • a letter of motivation for joining the research group and how you meet the criteria set above
  • copies of your degree certificates and academic transcripts (copies) of previously completed university degree programmes (BA, MA/MSc and PhD), and
  • a list of publications or a link to an online list of publications

The position will remain open until filled. Job interviews will take place either physically or via video call.

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) pursues a non-discriminatory employment policy and values equal opportunities, as well as diversity. Individuals from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
