Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH in Vienna is seeking an Optical Systems Development Engineer to build high-performance optical systems for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) applications. You will manage the full development lifecycle from breadboard concepts to compact micro-optical implementations and integrated hardware.
You will conduct simulations using Zemax OpticStudio, MATLAB, and Python, perform alignment, verification, and validation, and collaborate with physics, engineering, and
At Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH (qtlabs), we are developing next-generation quantum communication technologies for space and terrestrial applications. Our work combines quantum optics, cryptography, and advanced engineering to create practical systems for secure communication in the quantum era.
Based in Vienna, our team brings together experts in quantum key distribution (QKD), optical communication, system engineering, and security-critical technologies. We are now looking for an Expert for secure implementation of QKD Systems to strengthen our expertise in the secure implementation, validation, and certification readiness of QKD devices and networks.
Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
Join us in building the next generation of secure quantum communication systems—for space and beyond. As an Optical Systems Development Engineer, you will develop high-performance optical systems for cutting-edge Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) applications.
You will take ownership of optical setups throughout the complete development lifecycle—from early breadboard experiments and performance simulations to compact micro-optical implementations and integrated hardware. Working in a multidisciplinary team of physicists and engineers, you will independently plan, procure, assemble, align, and validate optical systems.
This role combines hands-on laboratory work with optical system engineering and cross-functional product integration. It is ideal for someone who enjoys translating optical concepts into robust, manufacturable systems and is comfortable taking responsibility throughout the development process.
We are looking for candidates with hands-on experience in optical system development and strengths in several of the areas listed below. We do not expect applicants to have experience in every area.
You will work at the intersection of quantum technology, optical engineering, and space systems, turning advanced optical concepts into real-world hardware. You will have substantial technical ownership and the opportunity to shape optical systems from early development through integration and qualification.
We welcome applications from all qualified candidates.
The minimum gross salary for this position is €3.157,47 per month (based on full-time employment) in accordance with the collective agreement. However, there is a willingness to offer a higher salary depending on experience and qualifications.
