International Atomic Energy Agency seeks a Consultant – Technical Laboratory to support the Radiation Safety Technical Services (RSTS) Laboratory at Seibersdorf. You will conduct workplace monitoring, calibrate instruments, and assist in safety system testing, aligning with Radiation Safety Regulations and QA requirements.

The role requires a university degree in physics or chemistry, at least five years in radiation protection, and strong English skills.

Qualifikationen

Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.
The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material that enable the beneficial uses of radiation to be exploited while ensuring appropriate protection of workers, the public, patients and the environment. It also assists Member States in the implementation of these standards and provides related services.
The Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section is responsible for the delineation of an international programme to protect workers, patients and the public from all types of exposure to natural or artificial radiation, in line with the most recent scientific knowledge and information. The Section is also responsible for the provision of radiation safety technical services to staff members and experts who may be exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of activities conducted by the IAEA.

Main Purpose

Provide technical and operational support to the Radiation Safety Technical Services (RSTS) Laboratory in the following areas:
1. Conduct workplace monitoring for the IAEA's own operations and for operations under its control or supervision to support the implementation of the Radiation Safety Regulations on IAEA premises, particularly at the IAEA Seibersdorf.
2. Contribute to the maintenance and implementation of a quality assurance program for the operational survey activities in the laboratories, e.g. develop and review working instructions and procedures, archive records of measurements and results, participate in safety reviews.

Functions / Key Results Expected

The consultant is required to deliver the following outputs:
1. Carry out workplace monitoring for routine and non-routine events, including during the establishment and/or decommissioning of laboratory installations and equipment.
2. Provide support for radiation protection related matters during testing of technical and fire alarm systems at the laboratories.
3. Handle radioactive (nuclear, reference and waste) materials and sealed sources in laboratories.
4. Maintain and calibrate monitoring instruments.
5. Control and perform special measurements of alpha contaminated waste packs before delivery for disposal from the Nuclear Material Laboratory (NML) in Seibersdorf.
6. Lecture at radiation protection RP training.

Qualifications and Experience

University degree in Physics, Chemistry or related subjects.

Minimum 5 years of experience in radiation measurements and protection, with hands-on experience in operational radiation protection in a laboratory environment.

Experience working under ISO/IEC 17025 quality management requirements.

  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration

The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of € 250, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.
