Role Context
The Senior Internal Auditor will perform complete audit engagements covering planning, risk assessment, fieldwork, evidence evaluation, reporting, management action tracking, and final closure. The position requires a strong understanding of corporate functions, oil and gas operational risks, governance frameworks, and professional internal auditing practices. The role will also contribute to periodic enterprise risk assessments, development of risk-based audit plans, Audit Committee reporting, special investigations, and advisory assignments. Through independent assessment of governance, risk management, and control processes, the position helps management identify high-risk areas, address control weaknesses, improve business processes, and protect organizational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform assigned internal audit engagements from pre-planning and scoping through fieldwork, reporting, follow-up, and wrap-up.
- Assist with periodic risk assessment exercises used to develop the Annual Audit Plan.
- Provide input to risk-based audit work plans based on organizational objectives, significant exposures, and control priorities.
- Support periodic reporting to the Audit Committee and senior management regarding audit performance, significant risks, governance issues, and control concerns.
- Participate in strengthening the Corporate Governance Framework, including Enterprise Risk Management, ethics, values, and the Corporate Code of Conduct.
- Develop a detailed understanding of assigned business processes, objectives, activities, risks, controls, systems, and operational dependencies.
- Identify high-risk areas and critical control points before determining detailed audit procedures.
- Prepare audit planning documentation covering scope, objectives, risks, controls, testing procedures, and anticipated audit techniques.
- Develop detailed Risk and Control Matrices for assigned audit engagements.
- Define audit procedures using appropriate methodologies including Information Systems Audit Techniques, statistical sampling, analytical review, and control testing.
- Perform audit work in accordance with approved audit programs and applicable professional standards.
- Examine business records, transactions, systems, processes, documentation, and other evidence.
- Evaluate whether internal controls are appropriately designed and operating effectively.
- Assess the effectiveness of governance and enterprise risk management processes.
- Determine whether audit evidence is sufficient and appropriate to support conclusions and recommendations.
- Maintain complete and accurate working papers throughout each engagement.
- Update audit documentation continuously within the automated Audit Management System.
- Ensure working papers comply with approved templates, methodology, and internal audit procedures.
- Modify audit scope where significant risks or unexpected control weaknesses are identified, subject to required approval.
- Supervise audit work performed by Internal Auditors and ensure assigned tasks meet quality expectations.
- Review junior staff deliverables for accuracy, completeness, evidence quality, and compliance with internal audit standards.
- Provide technical guidance and coaching to less experienced audit personnel.
- Prepare audit findings supported by clear evidence and professional analysis.
- Discuss observations with auditees and obtain management responses before final reporting.
- Prepare audit reports expressing professional conclusions on risk management, governance, control effectiveness, and operational efficiency.
- Recommend practical corrective actions designed to address identified deficiencies and strengthen processes.
- Track management action plans following issuance of audit reports.
- Perform follow-up audits to assess whether corrective actions have been implemented effectively.
- Update the status of outstanding audit recommendations and elevate significant delays or unresolved risks.
- Participate in special reviews, investigations, and ad-hoc assignments directed by Internal Audit leadership.
- Provide independent professional advice when participating in special committees.
- Assist Audit Management with preparation for Audit Committee meetings.
- Support preparation of meeting agendas, minutes, governance information, control updates, and related committee documentation.
- Conduct workshops and presentations to increase awareness of Internal Audit responsibilities and value across the organization.
- Communicate significant risk issues promptly to Internal Audit management.
- Participate in development and enhancement of the automated Audit Management System.
- Provide professional input on Internal Audit Charters, Audit Committee Charters, methodologies, procedures, and governance frameworks across Group Companies.
- Support establishment or strengthening of Internal Audit functions and Audit Committees where assigned.
- Conduct research and benchmarking to resolve complex audit matters and identify gaps against recognized practices.
- Participate in specialized professional training initiatives across the Group.
- Coordinate audit activities with internal assurance functions, external auditors, service providers, and government audit bodies where required.
- Support effective audit coverage while minimizing unnecessary duplication between assurance providers.
- Provide input to departmental budgets and work plans.
- Investigate significant budget or resource variances affecting audit delivery.
- Contribute to Section MIS, audit performance information, and progress reports for management.
- Support continuous improvement through new audit tools, techniques, methodologies, and process enhancements.
- Comply with applicable HSE requirements, international standards, internal policies, and ADNOC Code of Practices during office and field activities.
Ideal Profile
The position requires a Bachelor 's degree in Finance, Auditing, Accounting, or another relevant discipline. Candidates should have at least 10 years of relevant internal audit experience, including varied exposure to oil and gas operations, corporate functions, and the risks associated with large and complex organizations. Strong familiarity with the International Professional Practices Framework and other recognized internal auditing standards is required, together with the ability to interpret and apply those standards in practical audit situations. The successful candidate should demonstrate experience developing Risk and Control Matrices, conducting risk-based audits, evaluating governance and control frameworks, preparing audit reports, and tracking management action plans. Candidates should be comfortable supervising junior auditors, coordinating several engagements, allocating time effectively, and maintaining complete documentation within an Audit Management System. Experience using business applications and audit technologies to collect, validate, analyze, and verify information is important. Strong interpersonal capability is essential because the role requires regular interaction with operational management, senior executives, Group Company management, external auditors, government assurance bodies, and internal audit service providers. Professional audit qualifications such as CA, CPA, CIA, CISA, ACCA, or CIMA are highly valuable. ISO and HSE certifications will provide additional advantage.
