Position Overview:
Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurses provide critical care to infants and children up to 15 years old.
In addition, PICU Registered Nurse is to provide around-the-clock care to these patients and to offer support to the parents. This parental support can range from emotional encouragement to advising parents on how to take care of their child when they return home.
PICU RNs work as a team member with other nurse practitioners and physicians. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that a child’s critical care treatment is secure.
Responsibilities
Key Accountabilities:
- Delivers a high standard of evidence-based care to patients at KCH.
- To review the medications ordered by physician for appropriateness, preparation of medication under aseptic technique and administration of medications.
- Assisting the PICU physicians in medical procedures.
- Using specialized medical equipment such as ventilator, nitric oxide machine, cerebral function monitor, therapeutic cooling machine etc.
- Formulating nursing plans and evaluating the effectiveness of treatments.
- To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of patients on an ongoing basis.
- Delivers a high standard of evidence-based care to PICU patients at KCH.
- Adhere to the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) guidelines, as well as all clinical guidelines and regulatory guidelines.
- Demonstrable capability of managing patients requiring level 3 critical care management including but not limited to:
- Advanced airway management
- Ventilation
- Invasive line management
- Inotropic support
- CVVHDF
- Ability to manage Critical emergencies
- Management of central lines and arterial lines.
- Obtaining and Interpreting Arterial Blood Gases (ABG).
- To have the competency of take Care of patients on ventilators
- Ability to take care of patients with advanced airway.
- Effective pain management including PCA/PCE
- To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of patients on an ongoing basis.
- To ensure that all patients and their relatives are updated regularly with accurate information and presented in a sensitive way and one that they understand.
- To uphold high standards of care in all departments of KCH.
- To actively support the implementation of centre nursing/local strategy and uphold the ethos of the centre.
- To maintain patient confidentiality at all times
- To have due regard for each patient’s cultural and religious beliefs and to respect each patient’s privacy, dignity, gender and sexuality.
- Comforting anxious parents and providing explanation about plan of care and patient condition. To ensure that all patients parents are updated regularly with accurate information and presented in a sensitive way and one that they understand.
- Liaises effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) in order to ensure that patients’ needs are met and that services are delivered in accordance with DHA care guidelines.
- Ensure that relevant information regarding patients’ needs and condition are communicated to the MDT and that any instructions are acted upon.
- Work flexibly across the organization as required to maintain safe staffing levels or as identified as a personal development need in the appraisal process.
- Participate in nursing audits, as required
- Report adverse incidents in line with KCH policy for investigation of incidents and to participate in the investigation process.
- Maintain good quality legible contemporaneous patient health records in line with KCH policy on health care record keeping.
Qualifications
Education & Qualification
- UAE Medical Health Authority License (DHA).
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or Degree in Nursing (minimum two years course duration) And Registration as a Registered Nurse from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia.
Experience
- Has worked in hospital or similar setting for at least 2 years
Training & Knowledge
- Paediatric Advanced Life Support Certified
- Demonstrable ongoing and active CPD
- Provides excellent patient care
- Good Computer knowledge
- Highly self-motivated – Possesses high internal work standards, sets themselves and helps others to set attainable goals; wants to do things better, to improve, to be more effective and efficient; measure progress against target
- Flexibility – Able to adapt to ensure achievement of objectives within constantly changing situations and environments
- Communication skills – able to relate and communicate with patients and staff at all levels and from different professions.
- Problem solving skills – able to respond to unexpected issues and provide first line response and to identify appropriate sources of secondary support.
