Job description

The post holder will always work within the scope of practice putting the health, wellbeing and safety of their patient first as they assess, plan, implement and evaluate their needs.

Responsibilities
  • Provide and coordinate patient care, educating patients and the public about various health conditions, giving advice and emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Assess and identify patient needs, implement and monitor the patient’s medical plan and treatment, and work with a team of physicians and allied health specialists in various settings.
  • Perform systematic patient assessment and re‑assessment, collect pertinent data, analyse the information and determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses, problems and issues.
  • Define predicted and expected outcomes of the patient’s planned care and create & evaluate patient care plans with the interprofessional team in collaboration with the patient and bystanders.
  • Record vital signs, recognise and address abnormalities, and if necessary, expedite escalation.
  • Maintain and update technical and clinical nursing skills, employ strategies to promote patient health and a safe environment, and understand diagnostic tests and lab examinations.
  • Perform essential life support and other emergency procedures, equipment and protocols relevant to the department.
  • Prepare patients for medical examinations and treatments, administer medications and monitor for side effects and reactions, administer IV fluids or blood products, and monitor for reactions.
  • Provide wound‑care management, assist in medical procedures (invasive or non‑invasive), and facilitate safe patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Document on patient records per current standards and policies, assist physicians with procedures, and perform routine and advanced nursing procedures.
  • Competently perform nursing care for patients who visit the outpatient department, optimising patient safety and reducing the likelihood of health‑care errors.
  • Have excellent observation skills, think critically, and make quick and effective decisions.
  • Perform CTG and assist with a range of procedures: IUCD insertion and removal, pessary insertion, cryo‑cautery to cervix and genital warts, intrauterine insemination, removal of shirodkhar suture, hormone pellet implant, vaginal examination, Pap smear, laser procedures, wound dressing, urethral catheterisation.
