Job summary

AtkinsRéalis in United Arab Emirates seeks a highly experienced Resident Engineer – Civil (Substations) to lead on-site civil and structural supervision for high-voltage GIS/AIS substations. You will ensure compliance with design specs, QA/QC, safety, and project timelines, coordinating with contractors and multi-discipline teams.

Ideal candidates hold a Civil Engineering degree with Chartered status preferred, and have 15+ years in civil construction, including 132kV+ substations; UAE/GCC

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required or equivalent.
• Professional Engineer/Chartered Engineer certification is an advantage.
• 15+ years of experience in civil engineering and construction supervision.

Responsibilities

• Supervise all civil and structural works for GIS/AIS substations.
• Ensure construction activities comply with project specs, QA/QC, safety and timelines.
• Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and utility authorities.
• Review and approve material submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and method statements.
• Monitor contractor performance and progress against drawings and specifications.
• Support testing, commissioning, handover and project close-out activities.

Overview

As a Resident Engineer – Civil (Substations), you will be responsible for leading and supervising all civil works associated with substation construction projects. You will ensure that projects are delivered in accordance with design specifications, quality standards, safety regulations, and project timelines. Acting as the key on-site representative, you will coordinate with contractors, consultants, and stakeholders to ensure efficient execution and successful completion of high-voltage substation projects.

Your role

Civil to lead the supervision of civil and structural works for high-voltage substation projects. The role involves ensuring all construction activities are executed in compliance with project specifications, quality standards, safety requirements, and utility regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise all civil works related to GIS/AIS substations, including:
  • Control buildings
  • Transformer foundations
  • Gantry foundations
  • Cable trenches and duct banks
  • Boundary walls and fencing
  • Roads, drainage, and underground utilities
  • Oil containment pits and firewater structures
• Monitor contractor performance, progress, and compliance with approved drawings and specifications.
• Review and approve material submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and method statements.
• Ensure compliance with QA/QC procedures and HSE requirements.
• Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, protection, and commissioning teams.
• Liaise with clients, contractors, and utility authorities.
• Review progress reports, variations, and contractor claims.
• Support testing, commissioning, project handover, and close-out activities.

About you

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
• Professional Engineer/Chartered Engineer certification is an advantage.

Experience

• Minimum 15 years of experience in civil engineering and construction supervision.
• Minimum 10 years of experience on 132kV and above substation projects.
• Proven experience in GIS and AIS substations.
• Consultancy/site supervision experience is mandatory.
• UAE/GCC utility project experience is preferred.
