Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, contingency, geopolitical, operational, credit, pension, insurance, financial crime, regulatory compliance, market, and reputation risks. All parts of the Global Risk team use their skills, insight, and integrity to handle established threats and emerging risks, acting to protect and enable HSBC to deliver sustainable growth.

Role Purpose:

The Senior Shariah Manager, as the primary risk steward for technical adherence to Shariah requirements, is expected to demonstrate strong leadership by organizing, supporting, and ensuring that all new Islamic Finance transactions undertaken by Global Banking and Markets, CMB of HSBC Group, comply with GB&M FIM and adhere to Shariah standards acceptable to the HBME Internal Shariah Supervision Committee & Global Shariah Supervision Committee ('Shariah Committees'). The role also involves supporting the Head of Islamic Finance Control in overseeing the Shariah-compliant business. A key focus is to ensure all controls related to Islamic finance transactions are robust and compliant.

Responsibilities:
  1. Ensure and assist the Head of Islamic Finance Control that products and financing transactions' documentation are Shariah compliant and aligned with Shariah Committee guidelines/approvals.
  2. Assist in implementing Islamic banking regulations issued by the Higher Shariah Authority and CB UAE.
  3. Coordinate Shariah reviews, audits, and ensure implementation of Shariah review processes across business units.
  4. Manage relationships with Shariah scholars, industry organizations, and legal firms.
  5. Implement Group compliance policies locally, liaising with compliance officers, and fostering a compliance culture.
  6. Conduct Shariah research and contribute to product, process, and policy development in an advisory capacity.
  7. Provide Shariah training to internal stakeholders, including senior management and board members.
  8. Serve as Secretariat to the ISSC and SCGC, preparing agendas and minutes.
  9. Ensure compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Requirements:

Experience & Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Shariah law or Islamic Jurisprudence.
  2. 6-7 years of experience in Internal Shariah Control functions; knowledge of AAOIFI Shariah Standards is an advantage.
  3. Proficiency in English and good spoken Arabic.
  4. Professional Certification from AAOIFI or CIBAFI is preferable.
