Job description

Position: Database Engineer

Hoxton Wealth is a leading global wealth management firm, delivering financial solutions to international investors and expatriates across regulated jurisdictions.

We are seeking a Database Engineer to design, operate, and optimise our data stores across transactional and analytical workloads. This role is suited to a mid-level engineer with strong hands‑on experience across relational and NoSQL databases, and a solid foundation in data modelling and reporting.

You will play a key role in ensuring data is reliable, well‑structured, secure, and accessible for both application workloads and business intelligence use cases. The role requires close collaboration with backend engineers, analytics, and platform teams, particularly in a regulated environment where data quality and auditability are critical.

You will work closely with engineering, product, and BI stakeholders to design schemas, improve performance, and enable accurate and timely insights.

Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and maintain relational and NoSQL databases, including MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
  • Develop and maintain logical and physical data models that support application workflows, reporting, and analytics.
  • Partner with engineering teams to translate business requirements into efficient, scalable database schemas.
  • Optimise database performance through indexing strategies, query tuning, and capacity planning.
  • Implement and manage data integrity, consistency, and validation rules across systems.
  • Support business intelligence and reporting use cases by designing reporting‑friendly schemas and optimised views.
  • Manage database migrations, schema versioning, and data evolution with minimal downtime.
  • Implement backup, recovery, and high‑availability strategies to ensure data resilience.
  • Ensure database security best practices, including access controls, encryption, and audit logging.
  • Monitor database health and performance, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
  • Support compliance and audit requirements by maintaining documentation and providing data‑related evidence.
  • Collaborate with analytics and BI teams to enable accurate dashboards, reports, and insights.
Requirements
  • 3–5 years of experience in a database engineering, data engineering, or backend‑focused role.
  • Strong hands‑on experience with MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
  • Proven ability to design robust data models, including normalisation, de‑normalisation, and schema optimisation for different workloads.
  • Strong SQL skills, including complex queries, performance tuning, and indexing strategies.
  • Experience supporting BI and reporting workloads, including data extraction, transformation, and reporting‑oriented schema design.
  • Familiarity with common BI concepts such as metrics, dimensions, fact tables, and aggregates.
  • Experience with database migrations, versioning, and change management.
  • Understanding of data security, access control, and compliance considerations in regulated environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with attention to detail and data quality.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders.
