Responsibilities

• Diagnose and manage critically ill neonates, infants, children and adolescents admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
• Provide advanced pediatric life support, intensive care assessment, stabilization, monitoring and treatment for high-acuity patients.
• Perform and supervise pediatric critical care procedures including endotracheal intubation, central venous access, arterial line insertion and advanced airway support.
• Manage invasive and non-invasive ventilation, oxygen therapy, sedation plans, hemodynamic support, fluid therapy and organ support strategies.
• Respond to pediatric emergencies, rapid response calls, acute deterioration events and critical care referrals across the hospital.
• Lead daily PICU rounds, case discussions, family updates, clinical reviews and care-planning meetings.

Context

The Consultant – PICU Specialist will provide advanced clinical leadership within a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, delivering specialized care for critically ill pediatric patients with complex medical, surgical, respiratory, neurological, cardiac, infectious and post‑operative conditions. The role requires confident decision‑making in emergencies, strong procedural capability, effective family communication and close collaboration with pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, respiratory therapists and hospital leadership.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose and manage critically ill neonates, infants, children and adolescents admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
• Provide advanced pediatric life support, intensive care assessment, stabilization, monitoring and treatment for high‑acuity patients.
• Perform and supervise pediatric critical care procedures including endotracheal intubation, central venous access, arterial line insertion and advanced airway support.
• Manage invasive and non‑invasive ventilation, oxygen therapy, sedation plans, hemodynamic support, fluid therapy and organ support strategies.
• Respond to pediatric emergencies, rapid response calls, acute deterioration events and critical care referrals across the hospital.
• Develop individualized treatment plans using evidence‑based pediatric critical care practices and patient‑specific clinical findings.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary care with pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, emergency physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and allied health teams.
• Monitor clinical progress, interpret investigations, adjust treatment protocols and ensure timely escalation or de‑escalation of care.
• Lead daily PICU rounds, case discussions, family updates, clinical reviews and care‑planning meetings.
• Communicate clearly with parents and families regarding diagnosis, treatment options, risks, progress and expected outcomes.
• Supervise junior physicians, residents, fellows, nurses and PICU staff during clinical care, procedures and emergency situations.
• Maintain accurate patient documentation, medical records, procedure notes, consent records, treatment plans and discharge summaries.
• Participate in clinical governance, mortality and morbidity reviews, quality improvement programmes, patient safety initiatives and departmental audits.
• Support continuing medical education, staff training, protocol development and professional development activities within pediatric critical care.
• Ensure clinical practice complies with hospital policies, ethical standards, licensing requirements, infection control standards and pediatric intensive care protocols.
• Contribute to a high‑performance PICU culture focused on safety, compassion, teamwork, rapid response and evidence‑based care.

Ideal Profile

• MBBS, MD or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
• Specialist qualification in Pediatrics with subspecialty training in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
• Board certification, CCT, fellowship, European Board, American Board or equivalent recognised qualification in pediatric intensive care or related specialty.
• Minimum 5 years of consultant‑level PICU experience.
• Experience working in tertiary care hospitals, internationally accredited hospitals or high‑acuity pediatric intensive care units is preferred.
• Strong expertise in pediatric ventilation, sedation, haemodynamic support, emergency stabilisation and advanced critical care procedures.
• Confident in managing complex pediatric emergencies, post‑operative PICU cases, sepsis, respiratory failure, neurological emergencies, trauma‑related critical care and multi‑organ support.
• Eligibility for relevant consultant or specialist medical licensing.
• UK CCT, Irish, European, Australian, Canadian or American Board certification is highly preferred.
• Excellent communication, leadership, clinical judgment, teamwork and family counselling skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure PICU environment with multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong commitment to patient safety, clinical governance, ethical care, documentation accuracy and continuous medical education.
