Job Description

The Consultant Physician is responsible for leading and supervising the delivery of high‑quality evidence‑based care; effectively and efficiently diagnosing, managing and treating all patients placed under their care. The Consultant Physician is expected to be an example of clinical excellence within their specialty and to provide leadership and training for junior medical staff.

Responsibilities
  • Supports, implements, and follows all hospital, departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures.
  • Helps lead and implement the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and productivity and utilization review processes.
  • Participates in the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and productivity and utilization review processes.
  • Assists with scheduling and supports the Division Chief in ensuring adequate medical coverage within the Division at all times.
  • Attends divisional meetings as required.
  • Assists the Division Chief in the recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate.
  • Assumes other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief.
  • Diagnoses and treats patients according to established standards of best practice for the post holder’s specialty.
  • Oversees the clinical activities of junior medical staff and assumes responsibility for their care.
  • Complies with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow‑up practices.
  • Practices appropriate utilization of the organization’s resources.
  • Leads ward rounds; reassesses both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis in line with established best practice.
  • Accurately documents all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures.
  • Regularly reviews results of all investigations and modifies treatment as required.
  • Liaises with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required.
  • Actively participates in multidisciplinary meetings to plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients.
  • Ensures patient preparation for all procedures, including obtaining informed consent.
  • Accepts clinically appropriate referrals from the emergency department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk‑in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals.
  • Participates in and ensures the provision of on‑call coverage on a rotational basis, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required.
  • Communicates clinical information to patients and their families and friends (with patient consent) in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a good working relationship with staff and promotes collaboration and a team‑based approach to patient care.
  • Performs other clinical duties as assigned.
  • Helps lead quality improvement within the department.
  • Supports a culture of regular audit and encourages the use of audit results for improving clinical practice.
  • Supports the reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents.
  • Fosters a culture of learning, development and continuous improvement across the department by:
  • Promoting and assisting in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff.
  • Facilitating the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialty.
  • Showing commitment to continued medical education (CME).
  • Promoting and participating in clinical research and publication.
  • Keeping abreast of current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry.
Compliance Guidelines
  • Comply consistently with facility policies, procedures and practices and ensure alignment with SSMC facility policies.
  • Complete and maintain regulatory requirements including licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established time frames.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Tier 1: No less than 2 years of relevant experience as a consultant or equivalent post‑board certification.
  • Tier 2: No less than 8 years of full‑time employment as a consultant or equivalent post‑board certification (includes years in fellowship training) in an internationally accredited institute.

For UAE Nationals:

  • Clinical fellowship training following primary specialty board may substitute for experience as follows:
  • Each year of clinical fellowship is counted as two years of clinical experience.
  • Applicable only to clinical subspecialty fellowship in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, USA or HAAD accredited fellowship programs.

Educational Qualification:

  • Tier 1: Qualification from Tier 1.
  • Tier 2: Qualification from Tier 2, current national license or equivalent, and certified proof of yearly CME.
