Role Context

The Consultant Pediatric Rheumatologist will lead specialist care for children and adolescents affected by complex autoimmune, inflammatory, and rheumatic diseases. The position combines diagnostic expertise, individualized therapy, longitudinal disease monitoring, family counseling, and coordinated care across multiple pediatric specialties. Clinical leadership will also extend to treatment safety, transition planning, medical education, quality improvement, and the continued development of pediatric rheumatology services.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess children and adolescents referred with suspected or established pediatric rheumatologic conditions and provide consultant-level clinical management.
• Diagnose and treat juvenile idiopathic arthritis, juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus, connective tissue diseases, and juvenile dermatomyositis.
• Manage systemic vasculitis, Kawasaki disease, juvenile spondyloarthritis, inflammatory myopathies, and other complex inflammatory disorders.
• Evaluate children with autoinflammatory diseases and periodic fever syndromes, establishing appropriate investigation and treatment pathways.
• Perform detailed rheumatologic assessments and comprehensive pediatric musculoskeletal examinations.
• Develop individualized treatment strategies according to disease activity, clinical findings, comorbidities, and evidence-based pediatric rheumatology guidelines.
• Prescribe, supervise, and monitor immunosuppressive, immunomodulatory, biologic, and targeted therapies while maintaining close oversight of treatment safety.
• Track disease progression, therapeutic response, adverse effects, laboratory findings, and potential long-term complications.
• Coordinate pediatric uveitis management with Ophthalmology and contribute to integrated treatment decisions.
• Work closely with Pediatric Immunology, Nephrology, Dermatology, Orthopedics, Physiotherapy, and other specialties involved in complex pediatric care.
• Participate actively in multidisciplinary clinics, case discussions, clinical meetings, and difficult-case reviews.
• Counsel children, adolescents, parents, and caregivers on chronic disease management, medications, treatment expectations, and ongoing monitoring.
• Support structured transition-of-care pathways for adolescent patients moving from pediatric to adult rheumatology services.
• Maintain precise clinical records and ensure care complies with UAE healthcare regulations, clinical governance requirements, and hospital policies.
• Contribute to patient-safety programs, clinical protocols, service audits, and quality-improvement initiatives.
• Teach and supervise residents, fellows, and junior physicians while sharing specialist pediatric rheumatology expertise.
• Participate in research, academic activities, clinical education, and service-development projects where required.

Ideal Profile

• Medical degree from a recognized medical school.
• Completion of recognized postgraduate training in Pediatrics.
• Recognized Board Certification or equivalent Specialist or Consultant qualification in Pediatrics.
• Fellowship or advanced formal training in Pediatric Rheumatology is required or strongly preferred.
• Valid Department of Health Abu Dhabi Consultant license or eligibility in Pediatric Rheumatology or an appropriately recognized specialty.
• Substantial post-specialist clinical experience in Pediatrics with dedicated practice in Pediatric Rheumatology.
• Proven ability to diagnose and manage complex autoimmune, inflammatory, rheumatologic, and musculoskeletal diseases affecting children and adolescents.
• Practical experience prescribing and monitoring immunosuppressive, biologic, and targeted therapies.
• Background within a tertiary pediatric hospital or specialist rheumatology service is highly desirable.
• Experience managing autoinflammatory and periodic fever syndromes would strengthen the profile.
• Pediatric musculoskeletal ultrasound experience is advantageous.
• Familiarity with transition programs supporting adolescents entering adult rheumatology care is preferred.
• Academic teaching, research, clinical audit, or quality-improvement involvement is beneficial.
