Overview
A senior cardiac anesthesiology consultant is required to provide advanced perioperative care for adult and pediatric cardiac surgery, thoracic procedures, major vascular operations, and interventional cardiology treatments. Must possess expertise in transesophageal echocardiography, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, cardiovascular physiology, critical care and emergency response. The consultant will collaborate closely with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses and other multidisciplinary teams to maintain patient safety and achieve strong clinical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist anesthesia services for cardiac, thoracic and major vascular surgical procedures.
- Conduct detailed pre‑anesthetic assessments covering medical history, cardiac function, comorbidities, medications, airway status and procedural risk.
- Review laboratory results, electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, angiography, imaging and other relevant investigations.
- Optimize medical conditions before surgery in coordination with cardiology, surgery and intensive care teams.
- Develop individualised anesthesia plans based on procedure type, cardiovascular risk, patient age and expected postoperative needs.
- Administer general anesthesia for coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement surgery, congenital heart procedures and heart transplantation.
- Deliver anesthesia for thoracic and major vascular operations and support transcatheter aortic valve implantation and replacement procedures.
- Manage anesthesia for MitraClip, electrophysiology, cardiac catheterisation and structural heart interventions.
- Perform and interpret intra‑operative transesophageal echocardiography and use findings to guide fluid management, surgical decisions, ventricular assessment and hemodynamic support.
- Establish and manage arterial lines, central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters and cardiac output monitoring.
- Interpret advanced hemodynamic data and adjust anesthesia, medication, fluid and circulatory support accordingly.
- Manage cardiopulmonary bypass transitions in collaboration with cardiac surgeons and perfusionists.
- Support patients requiring vasoactive medication, inotropic therapy, mechanical ventilation or advanced circulatory support.
- Provide perioperative critical care for cardiac surgical patients and coordinate postoperative transfer, ventilation, analgesia, monitoring and handover to intensive care teams.
- Respond rapidly to cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, severe arrhythmia, bleeding, hemodynamic instability and other perioperative emergencies; lead or participate in resuscitation and crisis management according to approved protocols.
- Collaborate with surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, technicians and allied healthcare professionals.
- Explain anesthesia plans, risks, monitoring requirements and recovery expectations to patients and families; obtain informed consent in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
- Maintain accurate preoperative assessments, anesthesia records, procedure notes, medication documentation and postoperative handovers; ensure medical records comply with DHA regulations, hospital policies and professional standards.
- Follow patient safety, infection control, medication safety, confidentiality and ethical practice requirements.
- Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives; review complications, outcomes, adverse events and opportunities to improve cardiac anesthesia services.
- Contribute to clinical research, publications, presentations and academic activities.
- Mentor junior anesthesiologists, residents, fellows and allied healthcare professionals.
- Engage in continuing medical education and keep up‑to‑date with cardiac anesthesia and perioperative medicine.
- Provide on‑call and emergency anesthesia coverage in line with departmental requirements.
Ideal Profile
- MBBS, MD or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
- Completion of a recognised residency programme in Anesthesiology.
- Fellowship or advanced subspecialty training in Cardiac Anesthesiology.
- Board certification or equivalent specialist qualification in Anesthesiology.
- Certification in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography highly preferred.
- DHA licence, DHA Eligibility Letter or eligibility for consultant‑level licensing in Dubai.
- Eight to ten years of post‑specialisation experience in Cardiac Anesthesia.
- Extensive experience providing anesthesia for adult cardiac surgery and significant exposure to pediatric cardiac and congenital heart procedures.
- Experience supporting interventional cardiology and structural heart treatments.
- Previous work within a tertiary care hospital with an established cardiothoracic surgery programme strongly preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of cardiovascular physiology, pharmacology, perfusion and perioperative critical care.
- Strong practical expertise in intra‑operative transesophageal echocardiography and invasive hemodynamic monitoring.
- Proficiency in managing high‑risk patients and complex perioperative complications.
- Excellent clinical judgement, crisis‑management capability and strong communication, leadership and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
- Ability to counsel patients and families clearly and compassionately.
