Job summary

POWERTECH in Abu Dhabi is seeking a Combustion Design Engineer II to advance next-generation propulsion systems. The role focuses on combustion design, gas turbine combustors, ignition systems, and alternative fuels, contributing to low-TRL R&D up to TRL 6.

You will collaborate with internal teams and international partners, analyze data from experiments and simulations, and prepare technical reports and design documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Combustion Science, or related discipline.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5–8 years of relevant experience in combustion design, gas turbine combustors, propulsion systems, aerospace engines, advanced combustion research, or related R&D environments.
  • Strong understanding of combustor design, fuel-air mixing, flame stability, ignition, emissions, pressure loss, operability, and combustion performance.
  • Experience with combustion testing, experimental diagnostics, data acquisition, CFD, combustion modelling, or simulation tools is highly desirable.
  • Exposure to hydrogen combustion, sustainable fuels, plasma-assisted combustion, microwave-assisted combustion, hybrid combustion systems, or advanced ignition technologies is preferred.
  • Experience with additive manufacturing-enabled combustor design or advanced propulsion component development would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Support concept evaluation and early-stage R&D for advanced combustion systems, including microwave-assisted combustion, plasma-assisted combustion, hybrid combustion systems, and advanced ignition technologies.
  • Develop and refine gas turbine combustor and novel jet engine combustor designs, including additive manufacturing-enabled concepts to reduce system losses and improve integration.
  • Contribute to research on hydrogen, sustainable aviation fuels, and other high-energy-density fuels, assessing combustion characteristics, operability, emissions, and integration potential.
  • Support the design, development, and testing of advanced ignition systems to improve combustion stability, efficiency, and operating range.
  • Participate in combustion test campaigns using advanced diagnostics such as chemiluminescence, laser-induced fluorescence, particle image velocimetry, pressure measurements, emissions measurement, or high-speed imaging.
  • Analyse experimental and simulation data to support combustor design improvements and technology maturation.
  • Prepare technical reports, test summaries, design documentation, presentations, and inputs for publications or intellectual property documentation.

Role

Combustion Design Engineer II will support the development of advanced combustion technologies for next-generation propulsion systems. This role is suited to a technically strong engineer with experience in combustion design, gas turbine combustors, advanced ignition systems, alternative fuels, and experimental or analytical combustion development. The successful candidate will contribute to low Technology Readiness Level R&D activities, up to TRL 6, focused on improving combustor efficiency, operability, sustainability, and overall propulsion performance.
