Position: Cardiac Anesthesia & ICU Specialist

Location: Misrata, Libya

Employment Type: Full-time

Department: Cardiac Anesthesia & Intensive Care Unit

Role Summary: The Cardiac Anesthesia & ICU Specialist will provide high-quality anesthetic care for patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures and manage critically ill patients in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). The role requires advanced clinical expertise in cardiac anesthesia, perioperative patient management, and critical care support to ensure optimal surgical outcomes and patient safety.

Responsibilities
  • Administer anesthesia for a wide range of cardiac and thoracic surgeries, including CABG, valve replacement, aortic surgery, and other complex cardiovascular procedures.
  • Provide comprehensive perioperative and postoperative care, ensuring safe patient transition from surgery to the ICU.
  • Manage critically ill cardiac patients in the ICU, including ventilatory support, invasive monitoring, and hemodynamic stabilization.
  • Participate actively in preoperative assessment, patient optimization, and multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Monitor and interpret cardiac parameters, echocardiography (TEE), and other advanced diagnostic data during surgery and in the ICU.
  • Collaborate closely with cardiac surgeons, perfusionists, and ICU nurses to deliver integrated cardiac care.
  • Ensure compliance with established protocols, patient safety standards, and evidence-based clinical practices.
  • Participate in training, supervision, and mentoring of residents, nurses, and junior medical staff.
  • Contribute to departmental research, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in emergency cardiac anesthesia and critical care on-call rotations.
Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Medical Degree (MD, MBBS, or equivalent) from a recognized medical school.
  • Specialization in Anesthesiology with subspecialty training or experience in Cardiac Anesthesia and Critical Care.
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience, including at least 2 years in a cardiac anesthesia or ICU setting.
  • Proficient in advanced airway management, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), and critical care procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of cardiac physiology, pharmacology, and anesthetic management for cardiac surgeries.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage critically ill patients requiring invasive monitoring, mechanical ventilation, and inotropic support.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and decision-making skills.
Preferred Skills
  • Fellowship or Board Certification in Cardiac Anesthesia / Critical Care Medicine.
  • Experience with ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).
  • Experience in a tertiary cardiac hospital or specialized cardiac center.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and contribution to academic or clinical training.
