Job description

The Biology Manager at World Butterfly Park is responsible for overseeing the biological and ecological health of the butterfly garden. This includes managing the butterfly populations plants and other wildlife ensuring a sustainable and educational environment for visitors. The Biology Manager will work closely with staff volunteers and researchers to maintain the gardens ecosystems and support conservation and educational programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Butterfly and Wildlife Management:
    • Oversee the care and breeding of various butterfly species.
    • Monitor butterfly populations and implement measures to ensure their health and sustainability.
    • Maintain accurate records of butterfly life cycles health and behavior.
  • Plant and Habitat Management:
    • Manage the planting growth and maintenance of butterflyfriendly flora.
    • Ensure habitats are suitable for butterfly development and survival.
    • Coordinate with horticulturists to ensure a balanced ecosystem.
  • Research and Conservation:
    • Conduct and support research projects related to butterfly biology and conservation.
    • Collaborate with universities research institutions and conservation organizations.
    • Implement conservation programs to protect native butterfly species and their habitats.
  • Educational Programs:
    • Develop and deliver educational programs and materials for visitors schools and community groups.
    • Conduct tours workshops and presentations to promote awareness of butterfly biology and conservation.
    • Create informational displays and resources for the garden.
  • Staff and Volunteer Management:
    • Supervise and train staff interns and volunteers in biological and ecological practices.
    • Coordinate schedules and tasks to ensure efficient garden operations.
    • Foster a collaborative and educational work environment.
  • Administration:
    • Prepare reports on garden activities research findings and conservation efforts.
    • Develop and manage budgets for biological and ecological projects.
    • Ensure compliance with local state and federal regulations related to wildlife and habitat management.

    Requirements
    • Bachelor s degree in biology Ecology Environmental Science or a related field (Masters degree preferred).
    • Minimum of 35 years of experience in wildlife management conservation or a related field.
    • Strong knowledge of butterfly species their life cycles and habitats.
    • Experience in managing plants and ecosystems in a controlled environment.
    • Excellent organizational communication and leadership skills.
    • Ability to conduct and supervise research projects.
    • Passion for conservation and education.

    Working Conditions:

    • Fulltime position with occasional weekend and evening work required.
    • Work primarily outdoors in various weather conditions.
    • Physical requirements include walking standing and lifting to 50 pounds.
